Lionel Ritchie baffled by granddaughter's name

Lionel Richie has "no idea" why his grandson is called Sparrow.

The legendary musician, whose daughter Nicole gave birth to her son last week, is waiting to discuss the unusual name choice with his offspring.

He said: "I have no idea where that came from. I will ask her, it is very interesting. With the excitement of the baby, you don't go into the name just yet.

"When I heard it, I thought it was my job just to go 'absolutely.' I will ask about Sparrow and she will have a story."

Despite reserving judgement on the new addition's moniker, Lionel is thrilled to be a grandfather again.

He is especially pleased with the way Nicole - who also has 20-month-old daughter Harlow with partner Joel Madden - has turned her life around.

Before meeting Joel, Nicole was caught with heroin, and in 2006, she was sentenced to time in jail for driving under the influence (DUI).

Lionel told FOX News: "One thing I love about Nicole is when she makes her mind up to do something, it's done. When Joel came along she found that one person, that partner that she needed to get her into that mode of taking care of herself and paying attention to her lifestyle.

"And then of course when Mouse number one and Mouse number two came along that was it, and I can tell you right now she is a different person."

Beyonce makes Cruise's daughter cry

Katie Holmes' daughter burst into tears at a Beyonce Knowles concert on Tuesday night (15.09.09).

Three-year-old Suri Cruise - Katie's daughter with husband Tom Cruise - was initially thrilled as she sat with her mother behind velvet ropes in the general admission section of the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

But when Beyonce took to the stage to perform her hit 'Crazy In Love', Suri started crying, hiding her face in Katie's coat to escape the bright lights and noise.

As soon as the number was over, Katie and Suri hurried out of the stadium, returning 15 minutes later with a pair of industrial ear-muffs for the toddler.

A source said: "We were all a bit shocked when they left after the first song, but they were back before long, with Suri wearing a huge pair of earmuffs.

"She was much happier after that, and clapped and danced to the rest of the concert."

Katie, Tom and Suri have been living in Australia for the past two-and-a-half months while Katie films new horror movie 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark'.

They are expected to return to New York this weekend.

Coldplay settle plagiarism case

Coldplay are "relieved" to have settled their long-running plagiarism row.

The British band have agreed an out-of-court settlement with Joe Satriani following allegations the group - comprising of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion - had copied parts of 'If I Could Fly' in their hit single 'Viva La Vida'.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Chris and the lads are relieved to get the whole situation out of the way.

"Terms of the deal mean they are forbidden to discuss the agreement they reached with Joe. It's been a long and drawn-out process involving lots of negotiations between legal teams. The band is happy that it's finally been resolved."

Online legal website News.justia.com says the case was dismissed in California Central District Court on Monday (14.09.09) "upon stipulation", thus suggesting the two parties reached a financial agreement out of court.

Satriani sued Coldplay in December claiming they had plagiarised his song by using "substantial, original portions" of his 2004 track.

He was demanding "all and any profits" from record sales.

The rockers' lawyers appeared in a Los Angeles court in April where they denied the allegations on behalf of the band and stated Satriani's song "lacked originality" and should not receive copyright protection.

A statement from the 'Fix You' hitmakers added: "If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental and just as surprising to us as to him."

Brown shares community service photos

Chris Brown has posted a picture of himself doing community service on the internet.

In the image, the 'Run It’ singer ' who was sentenced to 180 days of community labour for assaulting on/off girlfriend Rihanna ' poses in a fluorescent orange vest, baggy jeans and a white vest as he clears weeds next to a railway track.

Under the picture, posted on his Twitter page, the 20-year-old star wrote: "Check out my new outfit!"

Yesterday (16.09.09) was Chris' first day of community service, which he is completing in Virginia. He appeared to be in good spirits, taking time out to wave at fans who gathered to watch him work.

It is understood he will perform different types of labour over the course of his sentence, but exact details will not be released.

Chris has hired additional guards to protect him while he serves the sentence.

Chris attacked Rihanna in his car as they left a pre-Grammy Awards party in February, repeatedly punching her in the face and biting her arms.

He pleaded guilty to assault and in August was sentenced to six months of community service, 12 months of domestic violence counselling and five years probation.

The judge also issued a restraining order which requires him to stay at least 100 yards from Rihanna for five years.

Jonas Brother given piano for his birthday

Nick Jonas was given a piano for his 17th birthday.

The Jonas Brothers singer was delighted to be gifted the musical instrument as it brought back memories of writing one of the group’s songs.

Talking about the piano ' which was originally located at the Ontario hotel where the band filmed their movie 'Camp Rock’ - said: "It's actually the piano I wrote 'A Little Bit Longer' on. It's definitely got a special meaning for me. I originally wanted to get a plaque just to put on the piano when I got there saying that I wrote the song on, but the family just decided to get it for me.

"I think I'm going to put it in our office where our management team works. It's a nice piece of memorabilia with lots of meaning."

Nick, who turned 17 yesterday (16.09.09), admits he finds special occasions overwhelming because he doesn’t like being the centre of attention.

He added to People magazine: "I tend to keep things low-key for my birthdays in general. It's so much attention that it can be a bit much. But it's nice when people do things to celebrate."

The singer, currently number one with her second single Boys And Girls, said she appeared in the star's video for Love Today in 2007.

And when the pair met again recently on a French TV show, Mika took the opportunity to sing her praises and congratulate her on her recent success.

According to midweek sales figures, Lott's album Turn It Up is expected to enter the Top 5 on Sunday.

Taylor Swift - You belong with me

The beautiful Taylor Swift is back with her latest single from her debut UK album - Fearless. 'You Belong With Me' is a leaning towards Suzanne Vega, allowing her vocals to dominate this mid-tempo track, just allowing a little country-twang to come through.

It's very commercial track, with subtle production allowing the singing to take the spotlight.

Good single from an up and coming star.

Jon Bon Jovi wades into Guitar Hero debate

JON BON JOVI has backed the protest by former Nirvana members over the use of Kurt Cobain's image in a new computer game.

The Bon Jovi singer said he understands why Cobain's former bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic are "dismayed and very disappointed" that Cobain's avatar can be used to play songs by other acts in Guitar Hero 5.

The Nirvana frontman, who committed suicide in 1994, can be used by players to perform a number of songs, including Bon Jovi's You Give Love A Bad Name.

Bon Jovi said: "I don't know that I would have wanted it either. To hear someone else's voice coming out of a cartoon version of me? I don't know. It sounds a little forced."

He said he was also approached by bosses at game giant Activision to appear alongside Cobain and Jimi Hendrix in the game, but refused.

He added: "I had the paperwork, they wanted me to be on that game and I just passed. But no one even broached the subject with me that I would be singing other people's stuff. I don't know how I would have reacted to that. I don't know that I would have wanted it either."

Avril Lavigne splits from husband

Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley have split.

Avril is said to have asked Deryck, who she wed three years ago, to move out of their Los Angeles mansion after calling time on their relationship.

A source told Us Weekly magazine: 'She dumped him and told him she was leaving him. She wants to move on. Divorce papers will be filed any day now.'

Sum 41 rocker Deryck is apparently 'crushed' by Avril’s decision, and was keen to work through their problems.

Avril, 24, is so determined to move on from the relationship she has decided to ditch the tracks from her forthcoming album which she worked on with Deryck.

A friend told the publication: 'She is going to do new songs that don't have his mark on them. She wants no trace of him.'

Rumours the couple’s marriage was in trouble have been circulating for months, with Avril often seen partying with friends without her husband.

In June, Deryck went to the Los Angeles premiere of 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' alone, while Avril spent a week holidaying in Saint-Tropez with pals.

Deryck, 29, was not present when Avril showed her new clothing collection at New York Fashion Week on Monday (14.09.09).

Deryck’s representative did not comment on the report, while Avril’s could not be reached.
